AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Human mobility across geographic borders stands as a defining characteristic of our modern era. The influx of transnational asylum-seekers, refugees, migrants, tourists, and students has witnessed a remarkable surge, exhibiting exponential growth over recent decades. This diverse spectrum of movements has increasingly captivated the attention of social scientists, signalling a growing recognition of its multifaceted nature.

Despite this high interest, empirical investigations into human mobility have thus far remained fragmented. Research efforts have tended to be siloed, with studies primarily focusing on specific country pairs or regions. Migration scholars focus into migration patterns, while education researchers concentrate on student learning, and so forth. This compartmentalization has resulted in a fragmented understanding of the broader landscape of human mobility.

Addressing this scholarly gap, we propose the establishment of a pioneering Research Centre for the Study of Human Mobility. Our vision is to create a collaborative platform that brings together an extensive array of expertise, ranging from public officials representing national and international bodies to scholars from diverse corners of the globe. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration, our centre aims to undertake a comprehensive, up-to-date analysis of the myriad forms of human mobility in an integrated manner. Through this concerted effort, we seek to provide valuable insights into the complexities of contemporary migration, tourism, student exchange, and beyond.

RESEARCH PROJECTS AND RESEARCH AREAS

The initial research phase focuses on relatively less explored aspects of human mobility. In particular looks at the impact on immigration on the public finances, on the development potential linked to refugees hosting, to characteristics and determinants of return migration and to impact of immigration on the health status of the elderly and on the public health systems.
